Thoughtful young man sitting on a chair

Many men and women wait years before talking to a doctor about sexual problems, usually out of embarrassment. Yet most of these problems are common, private and treatable, and they are easier to treat early. Here are nine signs it is time to see a sexologist.

1. Erections are weak or do not last

If this happens in more than a few attempts, get it checked. Weak erections can be the first sign of diabetes or blood-pressure problems. Read more on erectile dysfunction treatment.

2. Discharge happens too early

Early discharge that troubles you or your partner is premature ejaculation, the most common male sexual concern. Techniques and medicines help.

3. You have been trying for a baby for over a year

Both partners should be checked. Male factors play a part in about half of cases. See infertility treatment.

4. Desire has dropped for months

Low libido often has a cause such as stress, thyroid or hormones.

5. Frequent nightfall or white discharge in urine

These cause a lot of worry in young men. A simple test and the right advice usually settle it. See nightfall and Dhat syndrome.

6. Pain, burning or unusual discharge

This can mean an infection and should not be ignored.

7. A habit feels out of control

Compulsive masturbation or pornography use that affects sleep, work or relationships.

8. Anxiety before intimacy

Performance anxiety feeds itself. Counselling breaks the cycle quickly.

9. You are thinking of buying "power" pills online

Please talk to a doctor first. Many such products contain hidden drugs that are unsafe for people with heart problems.
